In Tamil Nadu, caste certificates designating individuals as Backward Class Muslim have been issued to those who converted to Islam. However, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court recently quashed the government order authorizing the issuance of such caste certificates to converts. The Tamil Nadu government has appealed to the Supreme Court, seeking a stay on this order.
